UEFA Women’s Euro: England Crowned Champions After Penalty Shootout Win Over Spain

England’s Lionesses have done it again — clinching back-to-back UEFA Women’s Euro titles after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Spain on Sunday night.

The game ended 1-1 after extra time, but the defending champions held their nerve during penalties to win 3-1. England’s Chloe Kelly sealed the moment with a thunderous finish that sent fans into a frenzy.

Spain had taken the lead in the 25th minute after “Mariona Caldentey smashed home a low shot from Ona Batlle’s cross”. It was a well-taken goal that rattled England early on.

But just like in previous knockout matches against Italy and Sweden, England showed their trademark resilience. They hit back in the 57th minute through Alessia Russo, who headed in from a perfectly placed cross by Kelly.

The game stretched into extra time. Neither side could find a winner, and penalties became the final decider — a situation England had mastered in this tournament.

“We’ve come so far together,” said Russo. “We believed right till the end. That belief showed on the pitch.”

England’s Goalkeeper and Bench Players Shine Again

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was the star of the shootout, stopping penalties from Mariona Caldentey and Spanish midfield maestro Aitana Bonmati. Then came Salma Paralluelo — Spain’s rising teenage star — who dragged her shot wide, deepening Spain’s woes.

“All I focused on was keeping my body behind the ball,” Hampton later said, beaming with pride. “These moments are why we play.”

Kelly, already a national hero for her extra-time goal in the 2022 final against Germany, once again delivered in a crucial moment. “I just knew I had to bury it. No second thoughts,” she said.

England have now become only the second team in history to win consecutive Women’s Euro titles, joining Germany in that elite company.

Spain, despite their dominance throughout the tournament, couldn’t deliver when it mattered. Interestingly, they had trailed for just four minutes throughout the entire Euro 2025 — and never once against England in regular play.

Yet football remains unpredictable. England’s tactical changes, substitutions, and mental grit proved to be the winning edge.
