World Cup Qualifier: Netherlands Held 1-1 by Poland in Rotterdam

In a pulsating 2026 World Cup qualifying clash at Rotterdamโ€™s Feijenoord Stadium on September 4, 2025, the Netherlands looked in control but Poland struck late to claim a point.

Denzel Dumfries rose unmarked in the 28th minute to head home from a corner, sending De Kuip into wild cheers.

Earlier, Tijjani Reijnders rattled the upright with a deflected long-range shot, while Dumfries himself was denied by a stunning save. The rebound clipped the post before bouncing off Nicola Zalewski.

Trailing at half-time, Poland returned with urgency. They pressed forward and carved openings. Sebastian Szymanski, back on familiar ground at Feyenoord, narrowly headed wide after Zalewskiโ€™s sharp cross.

The breakthrough finally came in the 80th minute. A flowing exchange of passes across the Dutch box ended with Matty Cash, the English-born fullback, blasting into the top corner. His strike triggered jubilation among Polish players and the travelling fans.

Group G Wide Open

Memphis Depay, chasing Robin van Persieโ€™s all-time scoring record for the Netherlands, threatened several times but could not find the net. Both sides traded half-chances until the final whistle.

The 1-1 draw leaves both teams level at the top of Group G with seven points. The Netherlands, however, stay marginally ahead with one game in hand.

โ€œWe fought until the end. This is the spirit we need,โ€ Cash told Polish reporters after the game.

Can the Netherlands top Group G as expected, or has Poland just signalled that they are a true force in this qualifying campaign?
