Czech teenager Jakub Mensik delivered a historic upset, defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/4) to claim his first ATP Tour title at the Miami Open on Sunday.
The 19-year-old, ranked 54th in the world, denied Djokovic his long-awaited 100th career title with a fearless performance.
The final was delayed for nearly six hours due to heavy rain. When play finally started, Djokovic seemed uncomfortable, using eye drops during a first-set changeover.
Mensik capitalized on the situation, breaking Djokovic’s first service game to take a quick 2-0 lead. Though the Serbian legend fought back to level at 4-4, Mensik dominated the tie-break, hitting two aces to take the set.
It was the first time Djokovic had dropped a set in the tournament.
A Historic Victory for Mensik
The second set was just as competitive, with both players holding serve. Once again, the set went to a tie-break. Mensik kept his composure and continued his aggressive play.
On match point, Djokovic sent a return long, sealing Mensik’s victory. Overwhelmed with emotion, the young Czech collapsed onto the court in celebration.
“To be honest, I don’t know what to say. It feels incredible,” Mensik said. “This is probably the biggest day of my life. I just tried to stay focused and control my nerves.”
The Czech teenager grew up idolizing Djokovic and acknowledged how special the moment was for him. “I have watched Novak all my life. To play against him in a final and win—it’s unbelievable.”

Despite the disappointment, Djokovic was gracious in defeat. “This is Jakub’s moment. It hurts me to admit it, but you were better today. In clutch moments, you delivered. Unbelievable serving and mental toughness—qualities that will take you far,” he said.
The match also set a record as the biggest age gap in a Masters 1000 final, with 37-year-old Djokovic facing 19-year-old Mensik.
It was the widest gap in any ATP final since 1976. Mensik now becomes the youngest Miami Open champion since Rafael Nadal reached the final as a teenager in 2005.
With this win, Mensik rises in the ATP rankings and announces himself as a serious contender on the tour. His next challenge will be maintaining this momentum as he prepares for the clay court season.
