Super Falcons Visit Injured Salgado, After Epic Match with SA

In a heartwarming event, the Super Falcons of Nigeria showed that football is more than just goals and glory. It’s about our common humanity.

On Wednesday, a group of players paid a visit to injured South African midfielder Gabriela Salgado in Casablanca, Morocco.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade led the delegation, joined by Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. They met Salgado at the Mohamed VI University Hospital and presented her with a signed Super Falcons jersey.

“We are holding Gabriela, her teammates, her family and close friends in our hearts,” read a statement from the Nigerian team. “In moments like these, the spirit of competition fades.”

Salgado’s Injury and Recovery

Salgado suffered a mid-shaft fracture of her left leg late in the second half of South Africa’s 2-1 semi-final loss to Nigeria.

The injury occurred after a collision during an aerial challenge, leaving players from both sides visibly shaken.

She underwent successful surgery on Wednesday morning and remains under close medical supervision.

According to Banyana Banyana’s team doctor, “She will be out of action for the rest of the year, but we are pleased with the care she received.”

The entire South African squad also visited Salgado shortly after her surgery, showing strong unity and support.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa sent his well-wishes, calling her “a woman of bravery and skill.”

Football Unites Beyond Rivalry

The Falcons’ visit was not just symbolic—it was deeply personal. Alozie, who scored Nigeria’s winning goal, was seen helping medics as Salgado was stretchered off the pitch.

Ajibade said after the visit, “We came to show love. We are rivals on the pitch, but sisters off it.”

The gesture has drawn praise across Africa, with fans and pundits calling it a powerful moment of unity.

As both teams prepare for their next matches—Nigeria for the final against Morocco, and South Africa for the third-place playoff against Ghana—the message is about respecting lives beyond the whistle, and celebrating our common humanity.

💬 What a beautiful world of compassion displayed by the Nigerian Super Falcons! Should more teams show this kind of empathy and camaraderie after tough matches?
