Nigerian Star Osimhen Breaks Scoring Record as Galatasaray Wins Turkish Cup

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen achieved a remarkable feat on Wednesday night, scoring two goals to propel Galatasaray to a decisive 3–0 victory over Trabzonspor in the Turkish Cup final. His performance not only secured the trophy for his team but also wrote his name into Turkish football history.

Osimhen came into the final needing just two goals to break the record for the most goals scored by a foreign player in a single season in Turkey. The previous record of 34 goals was held by Brazilian legend Mario Jardel, set during the 2000–01 season. Osimhen wasted no time in his pursuit of this milestone.

Baris Yilmaz gave Galatasaray an early advantage, scoring in the 5th minute after a well-placed pass from Yunus Akgün. However, the spotlight soon shifted to Osimhen after the break. Just one minute into the second half, he unleashed a precise low shot from outside the penalty area, finding the bottom corner of the net.

In the 63rd minute, Osimhen displayed individual brilliance, creating space inside the box before curling a stunning strike into the top corner, leaving the Trabzonspor goalkeeper with no chance.

Osimhen’s Place in Galatasaray History and Club’s Double Dream

These two goals took Osimhen’s tally for the season to an astounding 35 across all competitions, surpassing Jardel’s long-standing record. This achievement also elevates Osimhen in Galatasaray’s ranking of all-time top-scoring foreign players.

While his current total of 35 goals in 38 appearances is a significant accomplishment, he still trails seven other international players in the club’s history, with Romanian icon Gheorghe Hagi leading the list with 72 goals.

This Turkish Cup victory marks Galatasaray’s 19th title in the competition, further solidifying their position as the most successful club in the tournament’s history. More importantly, this win keeps their hopes of a domestic double very much alive.

Galatasaray now needs just one more victory in their final league match against Kayserispor on Sunday to secure their 25th league championship. If they achieve this, it will be their first league and cup double since the 1998–99 season, adding another glorious chapter to the club’s rich history, largely thanks to Osimhen’s record-breaking season.
