Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election, has maintained that his achievements as governor of Anambra State prove he has the capacity to transform Nigeria if elected president.
The former Anambra State governor made the statement in response to his former running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who recently claimed that none of the politicians seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027, including Obi, would be able to improve the country.
Speaking in an interview previewed by Arise Television on Monday, Obi outlined some of his plans for Nigeria, including reducing the cost of governance, fighting corruption and restoring order to the country’s political system.
“I passed through Anambra State, and I improved the state in critical areas of development. And I can do the same thing in Nigeria,” Obi said.
He said his administration would focus on bringing “civility and order” into governance while cutting what he described as irresponsible government spending.
Obi promises to tackle corruption, insecurity
Asked about specific measures he would take if elected, Obi said he would fight corruption, reduce waste, strengthen law and order and ensure credible elections.
“I will fight corruption; I will deal with issues of waste, law and order, and rigging won’t take place under my watch; political parties will function, and things will be done properly,” he said.
Obi also said his administration would prioritise national unity and security while focusing on critical sectors such as healthcare, education and poverty reduction.
Baba-Ahmed, who served as Obi’s running mate on the Labour Party ticket in the 2023 presidential election, had made his comments during an interview on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.
He said Tinubu should prepare to leave office but argued that the opposition figures challenging him would not improve Nigeria.
When specifically asked whether he was referring to Obi, Baba-Ahmed replied, “Including Peter Obi, I’m sorry to say.”
