Top leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are reportedly considering a mass defection to the newly formed National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among them is former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, rumored to now be his political ally.
Sources close to Obi, a former Anambra State governor, said the move followed growing apprehension with ADC’s legal situation and rising uncertainty after a Supreme Court judgment delivered on Thursday.
The apex court vacated an injunction that removed David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as ADC National Chairman and Secretary. However, it returned the substantive leadership dispute to the Federal High Court.
This partial relief has deepened anxiety among coalition leaders. Many fear the unresolved case could destabilise the party at a critical moment in the election cycle.
One party official explained: “If the party structure is skewed in favour of an aspirant, obviously that aspirant will win, and it will not amount to a credible primary election.”
Another aide confirmed Obi’s consultations with stakeholders, saying: “From my findings and understanding, he is going to make this intention known to all Nigerians and take action in the coming days.”
NDC Opens Door To Obi And Kwankwaso
The NDC Deputy Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, revealed ongoing discussions involving Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso with party leader Senator Seriake Dickson.
He said: “Obi is most welcome in the party, not just him, even Kwankwaso too. They have discussed with our national leaders, so you should just watch out.”
The NDC has reportedly offered Obi and Kwankwaso a joint presidential ticket, giving them a two‑week window to defect and secure its slot.
Meanwhile, ADC leaders warn that President Tinubu’s administration may attempt to sponsor crises within the remaining opposition parties, including the NDC, to weaken their platforms.
Binani And Kwankwasiyya Leaders Join Exodush
In a related development, former Adamawa State governorship candidate Senator Aishatu Binani formally joined the NDC on Friday. She said: “After carefully studying the party’s constitution, I saw a strong commitment to structured, policy‑driven governance.”
Binani emphasised that her supporters drove the decision: “Politics is dynamic and often local in nature. My foremost priority has always been the interest of my supporters.”
Also, Hon. Kabiru Adamu Abdullahi, a Kwankwasiyya leader in Kano, resigned from the ADC, citing directives from movement leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad criticised Obi’s alleged plan, writing on 𝕏: “Reports and indications suggest that Peter Obi and his blind supporters are reconsidering another political move away from their current platform, the ADC.”
He argued that avoiding party primaries undermines democratic credibility: “Party primaries are a fundamental pillar of democracy. If Peter struggles to compete fairly among fellow aspirants, it becomes difficult to convincingly argue that he can unify and lead an entire nation.”
