England Beat Spain 1-0 to Lead World Cup 2027 Group A3

England took a huge step toward the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 after defeating archrival Spain 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in London on Tuesday.

The victory, sealed by Lauren Hemp’s early strike, pushed the Lionesses to the top of Group A3, overtaking the defending champions in the standings.

“We started fast and took our chance early,” Hemp said after the match.

England struck within three minutes as Alessia Russo lifted the ball into Hemp’s path, allowing her to finish past goalkeeper Cata Coll.

Meanwhile, Spain reacted quickly, with Irene Paredes coming close, her header narrowly missing the target.

England nearly doubled their lead in the 19th minute when Hemp struck the post after a clever backheel from Lucy Bronze.

“We had to stay focused because Spain kept pushing,” England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton said.

Hampton made crucial saves before halftime, denying Patricia Guijarro at the near post to preserve England’s advantage.

England Seize Control Early At Wembley

The match marked the first meeting between both sides since England’s penalty shootout win in the UEFA Women’s Euro final last year.

Only the winners of each League A group will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 tournament in Brazil, making every point critical.

Spain increased pressure in the second half, with Olga Carmona’s deflected effort striking the crossbar.

Salma Paralluelo also tested Hampton, forcing another strong save as Spain searched for an equaliser.

“We knew it would be a tough game, but we stayed disciplined,” Keira Walsh said.

Walsh, who captained the side in Leah Williamson’s absence, marked her 100th international appearance in the match.

Late Defensive Stand Secures Vital Victory

As the game entered its final stages, England faced sustained pressure from the visitors.

However, Hampton produced a decisive moment late on, tipping Edna Imade’s header wide to deny Spain a last-minute equaliser.

“Those final minutes were intense, but we held on,” Hampton added.

The win ensures England maintain momentum in the qualification race, recording their third consecutive victory in the group.

Meanwhile, the match also featured a tribute to retiring goalkeeper Mary Earps, a key figure in England’s recent successes.

Across other fixtures, Norway defeated Slovenia 5-0, while Germany beat Austria 5-1 to remain unbeaten.

France lost top spot in Group A2 after a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands, while Ireland edged Poland 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

Denmark secured a late 2-1 win over Sweden, and Italy cruised to a 6-0 victory over Serbia.

As England now lead Group A3, the path to Brazil looks clearer—but can they maintain this form against other tougher opposition ahead?
