King Charles III Lands in Bermuda After Historic US Tour

King Charles III has arrived in Bermuda following the conclusion of a four-day state visit to the United States.

The monarch touched down at LF Wade International Airport in Hamilton, where senior officials received him.

A guard of honour formed by the Royal Bermuda Regiment welcomed the King upon his arrival. This is his first visit to the island as monarch and his first to any British Overseas Territory since his coronation.

Furthermore, a full ceremonial reception greeted the King. This included a traditional 21-gun salute and a vibrant display by the National Gombey Troupe at the National Museum of Bermuda.

Farewell to America 250 Celebrations

The King’s arrival follows a carefully choreographed visit to the United States alongside Queen Camilla. The royal couple concluded their trip with a community parade in Front Royal, Virginia.

This finale offered a relaxed atmosphere after days of formal engagements in Washington, DC. The Virginia stop featured a festive “block party” to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Meanwhile, the event showcased small-town culture with marching bands and Appalachian clog dancing. The King and Queen contributed dishes like Coronation quiche and honey from royal hives to a community meal.

“The alliance that our two nations have built over the centuries is truly unique,” the King stated during a widely applauded address to a Joint Meeting of Congress.

He also met with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a farewell meeting. Additionally, the royals paid tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Strengthening Ties With British Overseas Territories

In Bermuda, the King’s itinerary focuses on youth development, biodiversity, and public service. On Saturday, May 2, he will formally open the Great Bay Coast Guard Station in St David’s.

The King will also visit Trunk Island to learn about wildlife protection. This visit is seen as a major effort to reinforce the modern partnership between the UK and Bermuda.

Furthermore, the monarch is scheduled to meet Commonwealth athletes preparing for the summer Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He will also visit the National Museum to view the Queen’s Exhibition Hall.

“His Majesty’s visit will celebrate the many contributions the people of Bermuda make in their communities,” noted Governor Andrew Murdoch in an official statement.

The visit comes amid ongoing discussions regarding beneficial ownership registers and local cannabis legislation. These issues have occasionally caused tension between the UK government and Bermuda’s elected officials.

However, the ceremonial aspects of the visit have focused on cultural heritage. The King was seen engaging directly with local artisans at Hamilton’s City Hall and Arts Centre on Friday.

How do you think this first visit by a reigning King to Bermuda help reshape the modern diplomatic relationship between the United Kingdom and its oldest Overseas Territory?
