Arthur Okonkwo Eligible for Super Eagles Debut Now

FIFA officially cleared Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria on Monday, April 6, 2026.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper is now eligible to represent the Super Eagles in upcoming competitive fixtures. So now, his availability provides a big boost for the nation.

Furthermore, the decision follows a successful application to the world football governing body. This process concludes months of speculation regarding his international future.

“I am very happy to finally have this sorted so I can focus on representing my heritage,” Okonkwo alleged in a statement following the news.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sought a reliable alternative between the sticks for several months. They identified Okonkwo as a top priority.

“We have received the official clearance from FIFA regarding Arthur’s status,” an NFF spokesperson alleged during a briefing in Abuja today.

Consequently, head coach Éric Chelle can now include the shot-stopper in his squad for the next international window, which includes the 2026 Unity Cup in London.

From Arsenal Prospect to Nigeria International

Arthur Okonkwo joined Wrexham on a permanent deal in 2024 after leaving Arsenal. He previously played for England at youth levels, earning 10 caps between 2015 and 2019.

“It was a difficult choice because England gave me so much, but my heart is with Nigeria,” the player alleged while discussing his transition.

Nigeria’s policy on dual-interest players has successfully attracted several European-born stars over the last decade. This strategy strengthens the core squad.

“The process of changing nationality requires patience and correct documentation,” the official FIFA legal notice alleged regarding the approval.

The goalkeeper’s height of nearly 2.00m and his distribution skills are key assets for the national team’s possession-based style.

Strengthening the Super Eagles Defenses

Okonkwo has kept 11 clean sheets this season in the Championship. Furthermore, his presence provides healthy competition for current number one Stanley Nwabali.

“We want the best talents available to wear the green and white jersey,” a team official alleged during training today.

“The fans can expect me to give 100% every time I step onto the pitch for the country,” Okonkwo alleged in a separate interview.

Meanwhile, the NFF confirmed that the paperwork was finalized at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich earlier this week. This signifies the end of the wait.

“The administrative hurdles are now behind us, and we look forward to seeing him in camp,” the federation alleged in an official release.
