2026 World Cup: Japan Grab Late Equaliser in 2–2 Draw with Netherlands

Japan fought back twice to earn a dramatic 2–2 draw against the Netherlands in Texas, with an 88th‑minute equaliser thrilling the 69,285 fans inside the AT&T Stadium.

The match opened the World Cup campaign for both sides, and it delivered a tense contest that grew sharper as the minutes passed.

Japan arrived in North America without several senior players. Meanwhile, the Netherlands also travelled with injuries, yet both teams were still seen as dangerous outsiders.

The Dutch have reached three World Cup finals. Japan have never gone beyond the last 16. That history shaped expectations before kick‑off.

However, the Netherlands started brighter. Donyell Malen forced an early save from Zion Suzuki after turning sharply inside the box.

The stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys, kept its energy high. At the hydration break, the Cowboys cheerleaders appeared on the giant overhead screen.

Furthermore, Ronald Koeman’s team pushed harder. Malen tested Suzuki again with a header, and Cody Gakpo fired over from close range.

Japan’s fans, who outnumbered the Dutch supporters, briefly fell silent as their team struggled to create chances.

A late first‑half opening came when a cross slipped past Crysencio Summerville, but Keito Nakamura dragged his shot wide.

🇳🇱 Van Dijk Strikes First Before Japan Hit Back

The Dutch finally broke through on 51 minutes. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk rose above the defence and headed in after a perfect cross from Ryan Gravenberch.

Japan responded quickly. Six minutes later, Nakamura found space and fired low past Bart Verbruggen. The ball brushed Jan Paul van Hecke on its way in.

The match exploded again on 64 minutes. Summerville beat his marker on the right and curled a left‑footed shot into Suzuki’s bottom corner.

“The Dutch looked like they would hold on,” one spectator said as the clock ticked down.

However, Japan refused to fold. Their pressure from a late corner caused chaos, and Daichi Kamada was credited with the equaliser after a heavy deflection.

Both teams made several substitutions in the final stages. Each side had chances to win, but Japan’s late strike ensured they left Texas with a valuable point.

“Japan levelled at the death,” the match announcer repeated as fans roared.

The result keeps both teams alive in a group many expect to be tightly contested. Their next fixtures will now carry even more weight.
