Nnemkadi Chinwe Victoria “Nneka” Ogwumike, one of the most decorated players in WNBA history, has announced that she will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

The 36‑year‑old Los Angeles Sparks forward made the revelation in an exclusive interview with Taylor Rooks on Boardroom Talks on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, bringing an end to a 15‑year career that redefined excellence both on and off the court.

Born on 2 July 1990 in Tomball, Texas, Ogwumike is the daughter of Nigerian immigrants Peter and Ify Ogwumike. Growing up alongside three sisters – Chiney, Erica, and Olivia – she was surrounded by athletic excellence.

Chiney followed in her footsteps to become a WNBA star, making the Ogwumike sisters one of basketball’s most remarkable dynasties.

“I’ve learned there’s power in knowing when to walk away,” Ogwumike said. “I find myself grateful, fulfilled, and at peace with everything this game has given me and everything I’ve poured into it.”

She added: “I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I’ve been able to play and compete at such a high level.”

Selected No. 1 overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2012 WNBA Draft out of Stanford, Ogwumike won Rookie of the Year in her debut season. Her crowning achievement came in 2016, when she was named league MVP and led the Sparks to the championship.

Accolades include:

  • 11-time WNBA All-Star
  • 8-time All-WNBA selection
  • 7-time All-Defensive Team selection
  • 2012 Rookie of the Year
  • Named to the WNBA’s 25th Anniversary Team

By the Numbers: All-Time Great

  • Points: 7,879+ (4th all-time)
  • Rebounds: 3,565 (3rd all-time)
  • Steals: 707+ (5th all-time)
  • Games Played: 471+ (11th all-time)

She is the Sparks’ all-time leader in scoring, field goals, steals, and double-doubles, while also becoming the All-Star Game’s all-time leading scorer.

As WNBPA president since 2016, Ogwumike led two landmark Collective Bargaining Agreements. The 2026 deal secured the largest salary increase in professional sports history, raising the cap from $1.5m to $7m.

WNBPA Executive Director Terri Carmichael Jackson said: “Nneka Ogwumike’s impact on this union, and on the women’s game, cannot be overstated.”

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert added: “There is no telling the story of the WNBA’s recent growth and evolution without Nneka Ogwumike.”

Ogwumike spent 12 years with the Sparks before joining the Seattle Storm in 2024. She returned to Los Angeles in April 2026 to finish her career where it began.

The Sparks currently hold a 12‑23 record. If they miss the playoffs, Ogwumike’s final game will be on 24 September at Crypto.com Arena against the Golden State Valkyries.

Former teammate Alana Beard said: “Nneka has always led with a rare combination of strength, purpose and grace.”

With nine games left, the WNBA now embarks on a farewell tour for one of its greatest pioneers.
