Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has said he would be the first politician targeted if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or Nigerian Democratic Congress leader Peter Obi.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who has openly supported Tinubu, made the remark during a media chat in Port Harcourt.
Wike said he was fully aware of the consequences of his political stance but remained resolute in his support for Tinubu. “I will be the first politician that I think they will come after. I know they will come for my head,” he said.
He added that his daily focus was on the president’s re-election.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the president’s reelection. When I am eating, I think about the president’s reelection. Everything I am doing now is about the president’s reelection,” Wike stated.
Criticism And Political Battles
The former Rivers State governor acknowledged that criticism directed at him had been unusually intense.
“I don’t see where anybody in this country today has been called names the way my name has been. I am not bothered about people who say their own thing. My business is to support Mr President,” he said.
Wike also accused Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of working against him despite the support he claimed to have offered them in the past. He alleged that Abdulrazaq had been at the forefront of a campaign against him.
“Take for example, Kwara, he has been the one championing this campaign against me everywhere. Yes, I have confronted him too. I don’t talk about what I cannot defend,” Wike said.
He argued that the Kwara governor should appreciate his role in providing a political platform for aggrieved APC members who defected to the PDP rather than joining opposition coalitions against Tinubu.
Strained Relationship with Gov. Uzodinma
Wike recalled that Uzodinma had previously declined to support him despite the assistance he had provided. “Governor Hope, he knows the support I give to him,” Wike said.
Despite grievances with the two governors, Wike insisted that his disagreements would not distract him from his primary objective of securing Tinubu’s re-election.
He said he had never concealed his political intentions and challenged critics to identify the support they had provided him during his own political battles. “Any Nigerian who knows me knows that I have never hidden my intention,” he said.
FCT Projects And Achievements
Wike also used the media parley to highlight achievements in the Federal Capital Territory. He disclosed that the FCT Administration had completed 76 of the 107 capital projects awarded under Tinubu’s administration.
According to him, the FCT inherited 25 projects from the Buhari administration, of which 23 have been completed while two remain ongoing.
He added that eight projects inherited from the administrations of former Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan had six completed and two still ongoing. “This government has awarded 107 projects. As I speak to you, we have completed 76,” Wike said.
He pledged that all projects awarded under Tinubu’s administration would be completed before the end of the current government. “Before we leave office, every project we have awarded under this administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in FCT would have been completed,” he said.
Infrastructure And Transparency
Wike said the FCT had recorded significant progress compared with previous administrations.
“For the first time in the history of our city, no administration has been able to award that number of projects and complete that percentage. I challenge anybody,” he said.
He explained that details of the projects had been published in national dailies and made available to the media.
He also defended the administration’s approach to project execution, saying projects should not be described as abandoned simply because they were ongoing.
“So I don’t want to say that anyone has been abandoned. No. Some are still ongoing,” he said.
