Nigeria Tops Africa with 24 Medals at Commonwealth Games

Nigeria ended the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as the highest‑ranked African nation, finishing seventh overall with 24 medals.

Team Nigeria secured 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals across athletics, para‑powerlifting, weightlifting and judo.

Athletics delivered the biggest victories. Samuel Ogazi won gold in the men’s 400m, Ezekiel Nathaniel triumphed in the men’s 400m hurdles, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s shot put.

Goodness Nwanchukwu also defended her women’s discus throw F42‑44/F61‑64 title.

Historic Wins and Medal Highlights

Silver medals came from Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200m, Ruth Usoro in the women’s long jump, and Jessica Oji in the women’s shot put.

Bronze medals were earned by Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles, Kayinsola Ajayi in the men’s 100m, Temitope Adeshina in the women’s high jump, Ella Onojuvwevwo in the women’s 400m, and Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team.

The men’s 4x100m relay team initially won silver, but their medal was downgraded to bronze after a review.

Australia topped the overall medals table with 171 medals, including 70 gold, followed by England, Canada, India, Scotland and New Zealand.

The 2026 Games were a scaled‑back edition, featuring about 3,000 athletes competing in 215 medal events after Glasgow stepped in as host following Victoria’s withdrawal in 2023.

Nigeria’s seventh‑place finish underscores its growing strength in athletics and para‑sports, while also cementing its position as Africa’s leading competitor at the Commonwealth Games.
