Buendia’s Late Strike Smashes Arsenal’s 18-Games Unbeaten Record

The roar at Villa Park was deafening. Seconds from safety, Arsenal’s unbeaten run was ripped apart by Emiliano Buendia’s thunderous finish.

His strike, lashed into the roof of the net, gave Aston Villa a 2‑1 victory and reminded the Premier League leaders that perfection is fragile.

Mikel Arteta’s side had fallen behind to Matty Cash’s first‑half goal before substitute Leandro Trossard equalised after the interval.

But sloppy defending in the dying seconds allowed Buendia to smash home from 12 yards, sending Villa fans into raptures.

It was Arsenal’s first defeat in all competitions since their 1‑0 loss at Liverpool on August 31.

Emery’s Villa Rise

Villa have repeatedly troubled Arsenal in recent seasons, and this clash was another frustrating encounter with former Gunners boss Unai Emery. His team, riding a wave of seven consecutive wins, have emerged as surprise title contenders.

Arsenal remain three points clear of second‑placed Villa, but Manchester City could close the gap to two points if they beat Sunderland later at the Etihad. Emery had dismissed title talk earlier in the week, calling Arsenal “the strongest team in Europe.”

The north Londoners were vulnerable at the back, missing William Saliba, Gabriel, and Cristhian Mosquera. Jurrien Timber shifted to centre‑back alongside Piero Hincapie, but the reshuffled defence never looked settled.

Arteta admitted Arsenal are “prepared” to strengthen in the January transfer window if reinforcements can “improve” the squad. Defensive depth and attacking options may be crucial if Arsenal are to chase their first English title since 2004.

Match Highlights

Villa nearly struck early when Ollie Watkins, an Arsenal fan in his youth, forced David Raya into a scrambling save after a miscued clearance. Youri Tielemans set him up again, but Raya denied him brilliantly.

Emiliano Martinez saved Bukayo Saka’s curling effort, while Eberechi Eze’s close‑range finish was ruled offside. Cash, who had scored against Manchester City earlier this season, tormented Arsenal again in the 36th minute, slamming Ian Maatsen’s cross past Raya.

Trailing at half‑time, Arteta introduced Trossard and Viktor Gyokeres. Trossard immediately tested Martinez before volleying narrowly wide. Arsenal’s momentum grew, and in the 52nd minute Martin Odegaard slipped in Saka, whose low cross found Trossard for a clinical finish.

Trossard’s sixth goal this season marked his 50th in the Premier League. Arsenal pressed for a winner, but Watkins and Donyell Malen threatened on the counter. Odegaard’s rocket was tipped over by Martinez.

Just as Arsenal looked set to escape with a draw, Buendia pounced, blasting into the roof of the net after a failed clearance.

Villa’s victory was more than three points — it was a statement. Could Emery’s side truly challenge for the title, or was this simply another twist in Arsenal’s long pursuit of glory? Some even wonder if Arsenal’s defensive crisis could derail their campaign before reinforcements arrive.
