WAFCON: Super Falcons Top Group After Goalless Draw with Algeria

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have finished top of Group B at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2025 following a 0-0 draw against Algeria on Sunday in Casablanca, Morocco.

Head coach Justin Madugu opted to rest several key players in the final group match, having already secured qualification for the quarterfinals. Forwards Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Rasheedat Ajibade were all left on the bench, as Chinwendu Ihezuo was handed a rare start.

Despite dominating the match with 24 shots, the Falcons were unable to find a breakthrough, as the Algerian defence held firm throughout the 90 minutes.

Nigerian substitutes Esther Okoronkwo and Gift Monday came close, but Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi pulled off a string of saves to keep the score level.

The result sees Nigeria finish the group stage with 7 points, while Algeria, with 5 points, qualify for the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.

Despite not finding the back of the net, the performance highlighted the Falcons’ squad depth ahead of the knockout stages.

Nigeria will now face the second-placed team from Group A, Zambia, in the quarterfinals later this week.

Do you think Nigeria’s decision to rest key players was smart ahead of the quarterfinal clash against Zambia?
