UEFA Champions League: Arsenal Dominate Real Madrid 3-0 in Champions League Quarter-Final First Leg

Arsenal took a commanding 3-0 lead over Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, with Declan Rice delivering two stunning free kicks—the first of his career.

The match was played at the Emirates Stadium in London, Arsenal’s home ground. The stadium was packed with fans who created an electric atmosphere, just as Mikel Arteta had requested before the game.

Lineups

Arsenal: David Raya, Ben White, William Saliba, Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Thomas Partey, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Mikel Merino.

Real Madrid: Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rüdiger, Nacho Fernández, David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga, Luka Modrić, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Jr, Rodrygo, Kylian Mbappé.

How the Match Unfolded

Arsenal, taking to manager Mikel Arteta’s game plan, opened the game with a surprisingly aggressive start, sending dangerous crosses into Madrid’s penalty box.

Real Madrid’s first opportunity came in the 20th minute, when Vinícius Jr curled a shot wide. Arsenal remained dominant, controlling possession and tempo before breaking through in the 58th minute.

Rice stunned Real Madrid with his first-ever career free-kick goal, curling the ball around the wall and past Thibaut Courtois to put Arsenal ahead.

Twelve minutes later, Rice struck again with another long-range free kick, bending it into the top right corner, leaving Madrid shocked.

Mikel Merino sealed the emphatic victory in the 75th minute, finding the bottom corner from inside the penalty area.

Madrid’s woes deepened when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in stoppage time, receiving his second yellow card of the night.

Post-Match Analysis

Arsenal’s performance was clinical, displaying ruthlessness and control against a historically dominant Champions League side. With injuries plaguing Arteta’s squad, Jakub Kiwior filled in at center-back alongside William Saliba, while Bukayo Saka tormented Madrid’s defense, particularly David Alaba.

Despite Madrid’s pedigree, their defensive were exposed. Jude Bellingham and Alaba had to clear goal-line efforts to prevent further damage, and Courtois struggled with set-pieces—a weakness Arsenal exploited perfectly.

What the Coaches Said

Arteta praised his team’s composure, calling it a “complete performance.

“We’ve been dealing with injuries, but tonight showed the mentality we have. Declan’s free kicks nearly lifted the roof off. We’ll go to Madrid knowing we have a great chance to make the semi-finals.”

Carlo Ancelotti admitted Madrid was second-best, saying, “We lacked intensity and didn’t defend well. We need a big reaction in the second leg.”

Player of the Match

Declan Rice was undeniably the star of the night, delivering two world-class free kicks and dictating Arsenal’s midfield dominance.

What Next?

Arsenal will travel to the Santiago Bernabéu next week for the second leg, needing to protect their 3-0 advantage to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2008-09.

Madrid faces an uphill battle, needing four goals to overturn the deficit. However, the Spanish giants have produced incredible comebacks before, and Arsenal must remain focused.
