Employees of the Federal Government of Nigeria will begin receiving the new minimum wage payment from today September 26.
This is confirmed by Bawa Mokwa of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. Federal employees can expect to receive notifications regarding their updated minimum wage salary payments from today.
He said he is however unsure if the outstanding arrears would be part of the payments.
The Federal Government, through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), announced that the payment of the revised minimum wage officially begins in July 2024.
Last week, the Committee on Consequential Adjustments in Salaries for Civil Servants met to discuss the new minimum wage structure and also agreed on backdate the implementation to July 29, 2024.
This contradicts the promise made by the Minister of State for Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, in her May Day speech to the workers that the new wage structure would take effect from May 1, 2024.
This new development means that only two months of arrears will be paid, potentially shortchanging the workers by two months.
The workers unions are kicking against the July backdate decision, calling it “unfair and unacceptable.” The National Vice President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) said the Unions stood by the May date commitment made by the minister but did not what actions they might consider if the government reneged on its May commitment.
