A new political contest is taking shape in Abia State as Orji Uzor Kalu takes charge of the APC’s strategy ahead of the next elections.
Kalu, who represents Abia North in the Senate and governed the state from 1999 to 2007, confirmed his new role in a statement released on Monday.
The appointment comes as the ruling APC prepares to challenge Alex Otti, whose popularity has reshaped politics in the state.
Meanwhile, Otti, elected under the Labour Party, has acquired a massive and almost feverish following and support since taking office, making Abia a key battleground for 2027.
“I sincerely thank His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in me.”
“As the most senior Governor in the state, I am committed to working closely with all stakeholders.”
APC Strategy Faces Internal Expectations And Rivalries
Kalu’s appointment surprised some party members who expected Benjamin Kalu to lead the effort.
Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, is the highest-ranking APC figure from Abia at the federal level.
His position places him sixth in Nigeria’s leadership protocol, giving him strong influence within national politics.
However, party insiders say internal calculations and experience may have shaped the decision in favour of Orji Kalu.
The development could create potential intraparty tension, especially as both camps may have interests in the upcoming elections.
There are also indications that political ambitions within the Kalu family could shape candidate selection. Uzor Kalu’s younger brother, Mascot Kalu, is eyeing the gubernatorial ticket as well.
“To ensure that the APC in Abia produces candidates who are widely acceptable, united in purpose, and well-positioned to secure victory.”
High-Stakes Battle Looms Ahead Of 2027 Elections
Abia has shifted politically in recent years, with the Labour Party breaking the 24-year stranglehold of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), now in near tartars.
Otti’s administration has focused on good governance, grassroots reforms and massive infrastructure, boosting his public image across the state.
For the APC, reclaiming the state would require strong unity, strategic planning, and a clear candidate.
Kalu’s experience as a former governor and long-time political figure gives him a central role in shaping that path.
At the same time, internal divisions could affect how effectively the party challenges the incumbent governor.
The outcome will likely depend on how well the APC manages its internal dynamics while presenting a credible alternative.
