Eleven people have been killed and two others injured in a fresh attack by suspected bandits on Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident occurred at about 2:40 pm on April 26, 2026, when gunmen stormed the village and opened fire before security agencies arrived.

The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were released to their families for burial in line with Islamic rites.

Police spokesman Abubakar Sadiq said a distress call was received and a joint team of police, military, and other agencies, led by the Divisional Police Officer, mobilised to the scene.

He explained that the attackers fled on sighting advancing security forces. “Normalcy has since been restored to the area,” Sadiq said.

State Commissioner of Police, Ali Fage, has deployed additional tactical teams to forestall further attacks. He directed officers to intensify intelligence‑led patrols and strengthen synergy with community stakeholders.

The Command commiserated with families of the deceased and assured residents that efforts are underway to track and prosecute the perpetrators. It also urged the public to remain calm and provide useful information.

The Gurbi attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents across northern Nigeria.

On Sunday, gunmen killed at least 29 people in Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Witnesses said the attackers invaded during a football match at a primary school around 5:00 pm, shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee.

These incidents highlight that insecurity is worsening, not abating, in the North‑West and North‑East, and call into question the effectiveness of military deployments in these areas as bandits and insurgents continue to target rural communities.
