Those eligible to vote in the 2023 general elections have risen from 84.5 million in 2019 voters to 93.5 million.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the electoral umpire, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu during a quarterly chat with leaders of political parties.
He disclosed that 9.5 million valid new registration were made under the Continuous Voter Registration exercise which ended in August. About 2.8 million registrations were weeded out for several reasons ranging from unlawful multiple to underaged registrations, among others.
At least 23 Registration Officers of the commission have been fingered for unethical conduct during the CVR exercise and are facing disciplinary action, according to Yakubu.
Expectedly, the breakdown showed that 76.5% or 7.2 million of the new registrations were young people between 18 and 34 years, and 40% of the new registrations were said to be students.
Female new registrants accounted for 50.82% to men’s 49.18%.
However, the INEC boss cautioned that these figures are still preliminary until the register is subjected to public scrutiny across the country in accordance with the Electoral law.
