Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi have intensified preparations for the 2027 election after submitting nomination forms at the Abuja headquarters of the African Democratic Congress.
Their declarations come as the ADC attracts prominent opposition figures amid growing political realignments across Nigeria ahead of the next general election.
Atiku described his ambition as part of a national recovery project focused on restoring economic prosperity and rebuilding public confidence.
“The march to restore prosperity and better days to our beloved nation took a firm and decisive step forward today at the national secretariat of our great party, the African Democratic Congress.”
The former vice president shared the message on his X account shortly after submitting his forms in Abuja.
He said the project extended beyond politics and reflected a wider national mission to rescue the country from hardship and division.
“This is more than a political journey; it is a national movement rooted in hope, renewal, and the collective resolve to save Nigeria from despair.”
Atiku also appealed to Nigerians across religious, ethnic and regional lines to support the platform ahead of the 2027 contest.
“Together, we will restore the promise of our nation and bring good times back again.”
Amaechi Rejects Ethnic Politics
Amaechi, meanwhile, promised to transform Nigeria within four years if elected president, insisting that competence and performance should matter more than ethnic sentiment.
The former Rivers State governor criticised identity-based politics while attacking the “Emilokan” slogan linked to President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 campaign.
“What Nigerians should do is assess all of us who are running for office based on our records.”
He argued that Nigerians should examine the performance history of every presidential hopeful before voting in 2027.
“Nearly everybody who is running for the office of the president has served Nigeria in one way or another.”
“If you have performed, whoever has outperformed the other, vote for the person.”
Amaechi said his years as Rivers governor and transportation minister gave him the experience required to govern Nigeria effectively.
Between 2015 and 2023, he supervised projects including the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan railway lines under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
However, some critics later questioned the debt burden linked to parts of the rail financing structure.
ADC Emerges As Opposition Platform
The ADC has recently become a gathering point for politicians seeking a fresh coalition ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Amaechi maintained that he possesses the political strength and administrative background needed to defeat the incumbent government.
“Go back to Rivers State and see what I have done. Go back to the Ministry of Transportation and see what I have done.”
“I will, in four years, turn the country around.”
He also blamed Nigeria’s economic hardship on leadership choices built around entitlement politics instead of competence.
“It is the ‘Emilokan’ mentality that brought us here. It is our turn that brought us here. Now Nigerians are suffering.”
