Abia State Governor, , has approved an immediate feasibility study for the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor. He described the project as a strategic initiative capable of transforming the state’s economy.
The Governor gave this approval on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, following a meeting with a delegation from . The team, led by Mr. Nicolas Liu, presented a technical roadmap for the proposed port located in the Ukwa East region of the state.
Initially, the Chinese firm proposed a six to seven-month timeline to complete the study.
However, Governor Otti directed the team to finish the process within a shorter timeframe. He wants to fast-track the development to ensure the state sees early progress on this maritime infrastructure.
Strategic Access to the Atlantic Ocean
The Azumini-Obeaku axis is unique due to its natural deep-water potential and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Otti urged the engineering team to visit the site immediately to assess its technical viability.
This assessment will include evaluating the dredging operations required to allow large vessels to navigate the inland waterways. The Governor believes that positioning Abia as a player in the logistics industry will reduce the cost of doing business for traders in Aba.
Furthermore, the state will begin legal processes to secure the required licenses. The administration intends to engage the Presidency and the to ensure the project meets federal maritime standards.
Meanwhile, the will also be involved in the regulatory discussions. This policy alignment is necessary because maritime activities fall under the Exclusive Legislative List in Nigeria.

Governor Otti expressed great optimism regarding the partnership with . He noted that the project holds enormous economic potential and could turn the state into a regional maritime hub.
“With strong commitment, proper funding, and strategic partnerships, we can make the Azumini Sea Port a reality,” the Governor stated during the session.
He thanked the delegation for their detailed presentation and for showing interest in the state’s industrialization goals.
The Governor is confident that the upcoming study will yield positive outcomes that will attract more international investors.
By developing this corridor, Abia State intends to create a “Blue Economy” that provides jobs and modernizes transport. Historically, the Azumini River was a colonial trade route, and this project seeks to restore its commercial relevance.
The state government has promised to provide all necessary security and logistical support for the engineering team. This ensures that the technical assessment of the Obeaku coastline proceeds without any local delays.
