Northwest University Fix Cut-Off Marks for Medicine, Law, Others

Northwest University Sokoto has approved 200 as the cut-off mark for Medicine and Surgery for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The university announced the admission benchmarks on Thursday ahead of the start of undergraduate admissions.

Meanwhile, most other courses were placed at a minimum score of 150.

The institution said professional and health-related programmes attracted higher entry scores because of competition and regulatory standards.

The decision follows a growing national trend where universities raise benchmarks for courses with limited spaces.

In Nigeria, admission cut-off marks are influenced by demand, available facilities, and performance in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Health Courses Receive Higher Admission Scores

Abdallah el-Kurebe, Director of Communications, Public Affairs and Protocol, said the admission scores were approved by the university’s Admissions Unit.

“The approved cut-off marks reflect the university’s commitment to maintaining academic standards while also expanding access to quality higher education.”

According to the university, Common and Islamic Law received a cut-off mark of 180.

Furthermore, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, Radiography, and Doctor of Physiotherapy were fixed at 160.

Courses placed at 150 include Accounting, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, and Software Engineering.

Others include Information Technology, Public Administration, Biology, Business Administration, and Library and Information Science.

University Advises Candidates To Follow Guidelines

The university advised candidates to study the admission requirements carefully before applying.

It also asked applicants to monitor official communication channels for screening dates and application updates.

Northwest University Sokoto is one of the newer public universities in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The institution offers programmes in sciences, education, law, social sciences, health sciences, and management sciences.

Across Nigeria, universities have increasingly adjusted admission benchmarks as competition rises for professional courses like Medicine, Nursing, and Law.

The trend has also been shaped by rising UTME participation and limited admission quotas approved by regulators.

However, in general, cut-off marks are usually lower in northern universities than in southern universities where medicine, for instance, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, can be as high as 280 out of a maximum score of 400.
