The political climate in Benue State shifted again after several aspirants abandoned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defectors joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) under the leadership of Raymond Edoh.
The group included a leading governorship aspirant, legislative hopefuls, ward executives, and local government party officials.
They announced their exit from the ADC in Abuja after submitting resignation letters to the party’s national secretariat.
According to the defectors, the decision followed consultations across several communities and political structures in Benue State.
They said the move was driven by a desire to support leadership built on compassion, inclusion, and public service.
Dr Raymond Edoh is the leader of the NDC in Benue, a grassroots politician with a strong focus on community welfare, associated with humanitarian interventions, particularly support for youths, widows, and displaced persons affected by insecurity and hardship in the state.
His growing appeal is driven by a perception among supporters that he represents accessible, people-centred leadership compared to established political structures.
Defectors Cite Humanitarian Leadership
A statement issued by Dr Emmanuel Daudu, media director to Edoh, said the defectors collapsed their structures into the NDC.
Among the prominent voices was Sunday Atah, who described Edoh as a leader connected to ordinary people.
“We have decided to join forces with Dr Raymond Edoh because he represents the kind of leadership Benue State truly needs at this critical time,” Atah said.
“His humanitarian approach to leadership, accessibility to the people, and genuine concern for the masses have distinguished him from many others in the political space,” he added.
Furthermore, Atah said consultations across local government areas showed strong support for joining the NDC movement.
“Prioritises the welfare of the people over personal interests,” he said while explaining the reason behind the defections.
Political activities in Benue have intensified recently as parties reposition ahead of the next election cycle.
Edoh Promises Unity And Development
Welcoming the new members, Edoh described the defections as proof that many residents want a fresh political direction.
“Determined to embrace a new direction focused on unity, progress, and development,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NDC leader promised equal opportunities for all members joining the party structure.
“This movement is beyond politics. It is about restoring hope to our people, empowering communities, supporting the youths, protecting the vulnerable, and building a Benue State where everyone has a sense of belonging and opportunity,” Edoh stated.
He also repeated the party’s focus on agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment across the state.
The latest defections may reshape political alliances in Benue as parties battle for influence before 2027.
