Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been urgently transferred to a hospital in Zanjan, Iran, after what her family described as a “catastrophic deterioration of her health.”
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation said she suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis on Friday morning.
According to the foundation, “This transfer was done as an unavoidable necessity after prison doctors determined her condition could not be managed on‑site.”
Mohammadi, in her 50s, has undergone three angioplasty procedures and faces what her family described as a “direct and immediate threat to her right to life.”
She reportedly fainted after days of dangerously high blood pressure and severe nausea. After multiple bouts of vomiting, she blacked out and was moved to the prison medical unit for emergency intravenous fluids.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awarded her the 2023 Peace Prize, expressed concern over her worsening condition following a heart attack suffered in detention.
Background And Ongoing Detention
Mohammadi won the Nobel Prize while imprisoned for her campaign to advance women’s rights and abolish the death penalty in Iran.
She was sentenced in February to a new prison term of seven and a half years, weeks before the US and Israel launched military action against Iran.
Her arrest in December followed her denunciation of the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. Prosecutor Hasan Hematifar accused her of making “provocative remarks” at his memorial in Mashhad and encouraging attendees “to chant norm‑breaking slogans.”
Her family has called for all charges to be dropped and her sentences annulled, insisting her imprisonment is solely for peaceful human rights work.
