President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, describing his passing as a “painful loss” to his family, Kogi State and Nigeria.
Idris died in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 77. His death was confirmed as tributes began to come in from political leaders and other Nigerians.
In a condolence message issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his sympathy to the Idris family, the Government and people of Kogi State, as well as the former governor’s friends, associates and political colleagues. Tinubu described Idris as a committed public servant who devoted a substantial part of his life to public service and the development of Kogi State.
“Alhaji Ibrahim Idris was a committed public servant whose years in office formed an important chapter in the political and developmental history of Kogi State,” the President said.
He added, “His passing is a painful loss to his family, Kogi State and Nigeria. At this difficult moment, we must remember and honour his contributions to the growth of his state and our nation.”
The President also extended his condolences to Idris’s family and the people of Kogi State. He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the former governor’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.
Tinubu further asked Allah to give the deceased’s family the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
Idris was a former governor and a major political figure in Kogi State. His years in public office placed him among the leaders who played a role in the state’s political and administrative development.
Idris’ Years In Public Service
Ibrahim Idris served as Governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2011. His administration recorded interventions in infrastructure, education, healthcare and other important sectors.
During his time in office, his administration focused on areas including infrastructure and public services. The Presidency also acknowledged his wider involvement in Nigeria’s democratic development and public affairs.
Idris’s political career extended beyond his time as governor. He remained involved in public affairs and maintained relationships with political associates and other stakeholders.
His death therefore marks the passing of a former state leader whose political career spanned several years of Nigeria’s democratic experience.
Tinubu Prays For Idris’ Family
While mourning Idris, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to remember his contributions to public service and the development of his state.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his family and the people of Kogi State,” Tinubu said.
He prayed for the repose of Idris’s soul and asked Allah to grant the family the strength needed to cope with the loss.
The death of the former governor has also led to mourning activities in Kogi State, where Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo announced a three-day mourning period in his honour.
The mourning period is expected to provide an opportunity for the government, residents, political associates and other stakeholders to pay their respects to the late former governor.
