A digitally altered photograph of Michelle Obama has sparked false pregnancy rumours online, with fact-checks confirming the image was manipulated and does not show the former US First Lady pregnant.
The viral image circulated widely on social media, with some users commenting on Obama’s appearance and others celebrating what they believed was a pregnancy.
However, the original photograph was shared by Canadian jewellery brand Jenny Bird in April 2025, featuring Obama in an olive-coloured outfit styled by Meredith Koop
Fact-checks have established that the photograph was digitally altered to create the appearance of a baby bump. The original image does not show Obama pregnant.
Obama, 62, and her husband, former US President Barack Obama, have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
Despite the false claim, the photograph generated conversations about motherhood, age, and changing perceptions of women’s choices.
Some social media users used the moment to encourage women not to feel pressured by age or societal expectations, although the pregnancy claim itself is unfounded.
The rumour is not the first time Obama has been the subject of false claims about her body or personal life.
However, the manipulated image spread rapidly before fact-checkers could correct the record.
