The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians about a phishing scam that offers a fake “NIN Correction” portal on social media.
The advisory was posted on Tuesday on NIMC’s official X handle and flagged malicious links circulating online.
“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam.”
The commission assured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected from unauthorised access.
“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected.”
NIMC said anyone seeking to update or correct their National Identification Number should use its official self-service portal or visit authorised enrolment centres.
It told the public to avoid clicking unauthorised links and to verify updates only through official channels.
“Do not click any unauthorized links.”
The agency explained that phishing sites typically copy official pages to steal personal data, including names, dates of birth, addresses, and BVN-linked details.
Such fraud can enable identity theft, financial loss, and unauthorised access to other services.
NIMC asked users to report suspicious messages to its verified contacts and to law enforcement where appropriate.
The advisory follows rising online scams targeting identity data across Nigeria, where fraudsters increasingly use fake websites and social posts to lure victims.
