Shehu Sani Defends His Ambition to Return as Kaduna Central Senator

Former lawmaker and APC aspirant for the Kaduna Central Senatorial seat, Senator Shehu Sani, has defended his decision to seek a return to the National Assembly.

He said Nigeria’s stability and prosperity depend largely on the quality and independence of its lawmakers.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics programme, Sani explained that his ambition was driven by calls from constituents who believe he still has more to offer in terms of representation.

“There is no tenure in going to the National Assembly, whether it’s the Senate or the House of Representatives,” he said. “When your people feel that you still have a lot to deliver… you should be able to answer that.”

Sani lamented the lack of public attention on legislative elections, arguing that Nigerians often focus more on presidential contests.

“The very fact that Nigerians are more concerned about who becomes the president… they don’t usually take seriously who becomes their lawmakers,” he stated.

He warned that such attitudes weaken democratic institutions and contribute to governance challenges.

Importance Of A Vibrant Parliament

The former senator insisted that an effective legislature is critical to national development. “If you have a vibrant Senate, a potent Senate… you will have good governance in the country,” he said.

He added that the quality of the National Assembly directly impacts Nigeria’s democratic stability and economic progress.

“A quality National Assembly, a qualitative parliament, is as important as the stability of the country and also the prosperity of the nation,” he concluded.

If Sani returns as a senator, he be qualified among others to contest for the senate presidency of deputy if it is zoned to his region.

Sani has been an ardent supporter of President Tinubu and the South-West political interest and was recently appointed an ambassador-designate, although he is yet to take charge at his post.
