The Federal Government has threatened firm action against telecom operators in Nigeria who fail to meet service quality standards, insisting that conditions for improved delivery have already been established.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday. He said operators now enjoy a stable, transparent, and market‑driven environment that enables profitability.
“This is important as it means operators now have both the capacity and the resources to fix outstanding issues within their networks and improve the quality of service delivered to Nigerians,” Tijani explained.
The minister said the government had addressed sustainability concerns in the sector.
Measures include tariff adjustments, designation of telecom infrastructure as critical national assets, harmonisation of taxes, and macroeconomic changes such as the floating of the naira and removal of fuel subsidies.
He added, “It is now the responsibility of telecom operators such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and T2 to take all necessary steps to resolve network challenges and deliver the level of service Nigerians expect.”
NCC Empowered To Enforce Standards
Tijani confirmed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been fully empowered to monitor performance, enforce standards, and ensure compliance without interference.
“Going forward, we expect to see clear and measurable improvements in call quality, data performance, and coverage. Where operators deliver, it will be recognised. Where they do not, the Commission is expected to take appropriate regulatory action,” he said.
The intervention follows persistent complaints from customers about poor network service. The government insists Nigerians must begin to see improvements and receive value for money.
