The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) convened a major meeting with political party leaders at its headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
The session served as a platform to unveil and deliberate on new electoral guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chairmen, secretaries, and high-ranking representatives from various parties attended the briefing.
Notable party leaders included Senator Nenadi Usman for the Labour Party, alongside Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attended.
The review became necessary following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026. The INEC Chairman noted that the updated guidelines align strictly with the provisions of this new legal framework.
The commission outlined several preparatory measures to ensure a credible process. A key highlight is the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which is set to begin with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025.
Physical, in-person registration will follow on August 25, 2025, across the federation. This window allows eligible Nigerians to register for the first time or update their existing voter information ahead of the polls.
Furthermore, INEC announced plans for a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise.
The commission alleged that this process will remove duplicate entries and names of deceased persons to enhance the credibility of the final roll.
Debates Persist Over Electronic Result Transmission And IReV
Despite the new guidelines, debates around electoral reforms continue to dominate the political space.
A major point of contention remains the Senate’s position on the real-time electronic transmission of results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.
Opposition leaders have alleged that full electronic transmission is the only way to ensure transparency. They noted that any deviation from real-time uploads could undermine public confidence in the 2027 results.
The INEC Chairman stated that political parties can no longer operate using outdated regulations. He noted that every stakeholder must adapt to the evolving electoral framework to ensure a seamless exercise.
As the commission prepares, political activities across the country are intensifying. President Bola Tinubu has already received an endorsement from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term in office.
Meanwhile, opposition politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi are reportedly exploring a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
They alleged that a united front is necessary to challenge the ruling party effectively.
