Former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi said on Friday that many Nigerians are preparing to vote out Bola Tinubu in 2027.
He spoke during an interview on Channels Television, citing rising hardship and economic strain across the country.
“Everybody is suffering, everybody is looking for food to eat,” Amaechi said.
“People can’t buy fuel, can’t travel… everything is skyrocketing.”
“For Christ’s sake, President Tinubu does not have the right to speak… Nigerians are waiting to vote him out.”
Meanwhile, his remarks come as the political temperature begins to rise preparatory to Nigeria’s general election next year.
Amaechi Rejects ADC Consensus Plan
Amaechi also rejected calls within his party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to adopt a consensus candidate.
“If he wins, I will support him, but I don’t agree with those who say consensus candidate,” he said.
“Let’s go and face the people… there must be a primary election in the ADC.”
His position followed earlier remarks by Atiku Abubakar, who suggested consensus could be explored.
However, Amaechi insisted internal democracy must guide the party’s decision-making process.
“Let the people choose who they want in the party,” he added.
Furthermore, he dismissed zoning debates, describing them as outdated internal arrangements.
“This zoning thing is a PDP thing… what I agree with is the most qualified candidate,” he said.
Ethnicity, Religion And 2027 Political Battle
Amaechi criticised the role of ethnicity and religion in Nigeria’s elections, linking them to current national challenges.
“They are all regional candidates, but I am not a regional candidate,” he said.
“I’m not running because I’m Igbo… leave region and ethnicity alone. That’s what put us here.”
He referenced the 2023 Muslim-Muslim ticket, arguing that economic realities have reshaped voter priorities.
“The market does not know Muslims or Christians,” he said.
“The market only understands naira and kobo, no other language.”
Meanwhile, he suggested that regional politics could limit electoral appeal in 2027.
“If Atiku… says his only qualification is being from the North, then the North will vote for him and the South will not,” he said.
Amaechi also questioned religious balance under the current administration.
“You must protect all religious interests in the society,” he said.
“I don’t see the current administration protecting the interests of all religions.”
Furthermore, he argued that leadership should prioritise competence over identity.
“There are other factors that play important roles,” he added.
His comments may reveal the schisms within opposition circles over strategy, zoning, and economic messaging, showing that tough days still lie ahead for the main opposition party.
