The BBC has announced plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs as financial pressures mount across its operations in the United Kingdom.
The decision, revealed Wednesday by interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davies, comes as the public broadcaster faces rising costs and declining income streams.
“We anticipate the overall number of jobs will fall by 1,800–2,000,” Talfan Davies told staff in an internal message.
The cuts represent nearly one in ten roles within the BBC’s workforce of about 21,500 employees.
“Put simply, the gap between our costs and our income is growing,” he said.
The broadcaster must reduce £500 million from its £5 billion operating budget within the next two years.
Mounting Financial Pressure Drives Cuts
The BBC relies heavily on licence fees paid by UK households to fund its services.
However, income from this source has dropped significantly over recent years.
“We must reduce our total cost base by a further 10% by March 2029,” the BBC said in a recent financial report.
The organisation reported that licence fee income has fallen by 24% in real terms since 2017.
Meanwhile, changing audience habits and competition from streaming platforms have reshaped the media landscape.
Artificial intelligence and digital disruption have also added pressure on traditional broadcasting models.
“There are going to be some big and some difficult choices,” Talfan Davies said in a BBC radio interview.
Unions Warn Of Impact On Workforce
Media unions reacted strongly to the announcement, warning of consequences for staff and output quality.
“Cuts of this magnitude will be devastating for the workforce,” said Philippa Childs of the Bectu union.
She added that the reductions would affect the BBC’s ability to deliver its public service mission.
The National Union of Journalists also criticised the plan.
“These cuts are wrong, damaging and will cause uncertainty and distress,” said general secretary Laura Davison.
The planned layoffs represent the largest workforce reduction at the BBC in nearly 15 years.
In 2011, the broadcaster announced a similar plan to cut 2,000 jobs over five years.
Leadership Changes And Legal Pressures Mount
The restructuring comes during a period of leadership transition within the organisation.
Former director-general Tim Davie recently stepped down following controversy linked to a legal dispute.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC.
The case relates to a documentary that allegedly edited a 2021 speech connected to the US Capitol riot.
A new director-general, Matt Brittin, is expected to take over next month.
His appointment signals a shift toward digital transformation and long-term restructuring.
