A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to a total of 72 years in prison.
The court found him guilty of fraud involving ₦868 million in a case prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice James Omotosho passed the landmark judgment on Monday, March 23, 2026.
The EFCC accused Nwabuoku of laundering public funds through multiple complex transactions during his time in office.
Investigations revealed that he diverted these funds into various private accounts to conceal their illegal origin.
The Nation reported that the convict used his official position to facilitate the theft of taxpayer money.
Defendant Pleads Guilty To Money Laundering Charges In Abuja
During the court proceedings, Nwabuoku reportedly pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. This admission prompted the court to deliver its judgment without a prolonged trial process.
Justice Omotosho subsequently handed down a cumulative sentence of 72 years across several counts related to financial misconduct.
“The defendant laundered public funds through multiple transactions while serving in his official capacity,” the prosecution stated during the hearing.
The court noted that the severity of the sentence reflects the gravity of betraying public trust.
Furthermore, the judge alleged that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other public officials who might consider diverting state resources.
Nwabuoku was taken into custody immediately after the court session to begin his jail term.
