AFCON 2025: Lookman Fires Nigeria Past Tanzania 2-1 in Opener Game

Nigeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard‑fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Group C, thanks to a stunning strike from Ademola Lookman that settled nerves at the Fez Stadium in Morocco.

The Atalanta forward, who was Nigeria’s joint top scorer at the last AFCON, once again proved decisive.

His thunderous effort from distance in the 52nd minute restored Nigeria’s lead just moments after Tanzania had equalised, ensuring the Super Eagles avoided an opening‑day upset.

Nigeria had taken the lead in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home an inviting cross from Alex Iwobi.

Early in the second half, Victor Osimhen thought he had doubled the advantage with a clever backheel finish, only for VAR to confirm he was offside.

That reprieve spurred Tanzania, ranked 112th in the world, into action. Charles M’Mombwa capitalised on slack defending to volley past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali in the 50th minute, briefly silencing Nigerian fans.

But Lookman’s spectacular strike two minutes later restored control for Nigeria, who dominated possession (59%) and registered 16 shots compared to Tanzania’s six.

Despite the win, coach Eric Chelle will demand sharper defending and more fluid attacking play when his side face Tunisia in their next group fixture.

Lineups and Key Notes

Nigeria fielded a strong XI, with Osimhen, Lookman, Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey all starting. Debutant Akor Adams partnered Osimhen in attack, while Wilfred Ndidi anchored midfield.

Tanzania, led by veteran forward Simon Msuva on his 100th international cap, relied on captain Mbwana Samatta to spearhead their attack. Goalkeeper Zuberi Masudi produced several crucial saves to keep his side in contention.

Final Score

  • Nigeria 2 (Ajayi 36’, Lookman 52’)
  • Tanzania 1 (M’Mombwa 50’)

Location: Fez Stadium, Morocco
Referee: Dahane Beida (Mauritania)

Nigeria’s victory provides a confidence boost after missing out on the last World Cup and enduring criticism over inconsistency.

With Lookman and Osimhen in form, the Super Eagles remain strong contenders, but defensive lapses could prove costly against tougher opposition.

Next Nigeria will play Tunisia on Saturday Dec 27 by 9:00 PM at Complexe Sportif de Fès, Fez, Morocco.
