Nigeria vs South Africa: Must-Win World Cup Qualifier in Bloemfontein

Nigeria face a make-or-break test tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, as they clash with South Africa in a CAF World Cup qualifier at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. Kick-off is 6 pm Nigerian time.

The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, sit third in Group C with 10 points. Victory could lift them into second place and keep alive their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

South Africa, however, remain unbeaten at home in this campaign, winning against Benin, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho. The Bafana Bafana top the group with 16 points and carry a five-point cushion into this match.

Group C Picture

After seven rounds, the standings are clear. South Africa lead with 16 points and a +8 goal difference. Benin follow with 11, while Nigeria have 10. Rwanda hold 8 points, Lesotho 6, and Zimbabwe trail with 4.

Only group winners qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Four best runners-up will enter an intercontinental playoff for one more African slot. Morocco have already sealed their ticket.

If Nigeria defeat South Africa, then win against Lesotho and Benin, they could reach 19 points. But they must also hope the group leaders stumble in their last two matches. Otherwise, their fate may lie in the playoffs.

Key Team News

South Africa coach Hugo Broos will miss two defenders, Nyiko Mobbie and Thabo Moloisane, both injured against Lesotho. Kaizer Chiefs’ Thabiso Monyane joins as backup. Lyle Foster, fresh from a goal and assist last week, is expected to lead the attack.

Nigeria’s biggest worry is the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen, sidelined with a chin injury. The Galatasaray forward was seen as the team’s main goal threat. In his place, coach Eric Chelle may start Tolu Arokodare, with Cyriel Dessers and Samuel Chukwueze also in contention.

Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi could take advanced roles to sharpen the Eagles’ attack. Do you think Nigeria can cope without Osimhen’s firepower?

History and Form

South Africa last played at the World Cup in 2010 as hosts, their third appearance after 1998 and 2002. Nigeria have reached six finals but missed Qatar 2022.

Since 2004, both nations have met 13 times. Nigeria won six, South Africa only once, while six games ended in draws. Their last clash in Bloemfontein was during the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, when Nigeria edged a 2-1 win.

Form guides show South Africa flying with five straight wins, while Nigeria are inconsistent, recording two wins and three draws in their last five.

The stakes are high, and both teams know Tuesday’s clash could define their World Cup journeys.
