Viktor Gyökeres Joins Arsenal in £63.5 Million Move from Sporting

Arsenal Football Club have reached a full agreement with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon for the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres in a deal reportedly worth £63.5 million, with an additional £8.6 million in performance-based add-ons.

The deal makes Gyökeres one of Arsenal’s most expensive signings in recent years, as manager Mikel Arteta seeks to reinforce his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Gyökeres, 26, enjoyed a sensational 2024–25 season in the Primeira Liga, scoring 54 goals in domestic competitions and 6 more in European matches.

His explosive form attracted interest from top European clubs, including Manchester United, but Arsenal were quick to secure the prolific forward after weeks of negotiations.

“I want to play in the Premier League,” Gyökeres reportedly told French media, making his preference clear.

A Strategic Summer Overhaul

The striker had reportedly been pushing for the move, having missed part of Sporting’s pre-season training.

His absence was seen as a signal of intent, and Arsenal’s persistence paid off. Gyökeres will sign a five-year contract and becomes the fourth major signing of the summer, joining Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Christian Nørgaard.

Arsenal’s total summer spending now exceeds £180 million, reflecting their aggressive push to end a 21-year title drought.

Viktor Gyökeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya,

Sporting Lisbon had initially resisted the transfer, demanding a structured bonus package and rejecting rival bids.

Arsenal eventually agreed to a compromise, with bonuses tied to Champions League qualification and Gyökeres’ participation in key matches.

Gyökeres is expected to make his Arsenal debut during the club’s pre-season tour in Asia, with possible appearances in friendly fixtures against AC Milan (July 23), Newcastle United (July 27), and Tottenham Hotspur (July 31).

The striker will wear a new squad number, as Arsenal’s No. 9 shirt remains occupied by Gabriel Jesus.

Fans and analysts alike believe his addition will provide the much-needed presence and clinical finishing Arsenal lacked last season. His physicality, pace, and goal-scoring instincts are expected to complement Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke on the flanks.

Arsenal’s decision to invest heavily in a classic No. 9 underlines their ambition to compete at the highest levels in England and Europe in the coming season.

Arteta has hinted at further signings, with talks ongoing for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera and Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze.

Will Gyökeres be the missing piece in Arsenal’s title puzzle? Let us know what you think.
