President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Inspector General of Police to urgently identify and apprehend those behind the recent killings in Plateau State. He gave this directive following the murder of 12 travellers returning from a wedding, including the groom’s father and brother.

The victims were reportedly ambushed on their way from Zaria in Kaduna State to Jos in Plateau. President Tinubu strongly condemned the attack, calling it “unacceptable and barbaric.”

Reacting through a statement from the presidency, Tinubu assured Nigerians that those behind the killing would face consequences.

“The Government of Plateau State must take decisive action in handling these vicious cycles of violence,” he said. “The state government must work with security agents to get to the root of this recent incident and use it as a deterrent against future occurrences.”

He maintained that freedom of movement remains a constitutional right and vowed to protect Nigerians from threats to that liberty.

Freedom of movement by all citizens is non-negotiable. We will not tolerate any attempt by anyone or group of people to curtail that fundamental freedom through acts of extreme violence and fear,” the president added.

Tinubu condoled with the bereaved families and extended sympathy to the people and government of Kaduna State, where the victims originated.

Governor Mutfwang Visits IDPs, Pledges Support and Stronger Security

Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited internally displaced persons in Mushere and Tangor communities in Bokkos Local Government Area, following fresh terrorist attacks that left several dead and many displaced.

During his visit, the governor promised that his administration would not abandon the affected communities.

“Our hearts are with you,” Mutfwang said at Mushere. “This land must not fall. We will stand with you, support you, and ensure Mushere stands strong and unshaken.”

The governor directed his officials to conduct a rapid needs assessment. Relief materials are expected to be delivered swiftly, focusing on the most vulnerable, especially women and children.

He acknowledged the resilience of the Mushere people and thanked the local youth for cooperating with security operatives. He also urged them to steer clear of drug abuse and alcoholism. “You are our treasure. This is the time to rise in unity,” he declared.

Calls for Joint Taskforce and Rural Security Boost

In Tangor, Governor Mutfwang offered condolences to the Makai Tangor and other grieving families. He reiterated that no part of the state would be neglected and promised improvements in road access, community infrastructure, and rural security.

“The sorrow of Tangor is the sorrow of Plateau,” he said. “We are taking steps to improve security mobility, fix access roads, and reinforce deployments to ensure safety and stability.”

During the visit, District Head of Horop, Miskaham Jonah Dawum, advised the Governor to establish permanent security outposts in vulnerable areas.

He also suggested a joint taskforce between Plateau and Nasarawa States to better tackle recurring cross-border attacks.
