Former Bolivian President Evo Morales has accused the government of his former ally and current President, Luis Arce, of attempting to assassinate him.
Bullets reportedly struck Morales’ vehicle in an early-morning ambush. President Arce condemned the attack and called for an investigation.
The incident has escalated tensions, with Morales’ supporters blocking key highways and clashing with authorities since morning. The attack has garnered support from leftist leaders in the region.
Morales’ faction of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party claimed that heavily armed men ambushed his convoy. Morales demanded President Arce dismiss and prosecute several top officials if he did not authorize the attack.

Bolivia has been in political turmoil since Morales left power in 2019, leading to Arce taking office in 2020. Both men are expected to run in the 2025 elections, which has split the MAS party into factions.
Bolivia also faces severe economic pressures, including reduced gas production, declining foreign reserves, and rising inflation. Morales faces allegations related to relationships with minors, which he has denied.
