France-Morocco Showdown as 2026 World Cup Quartersfinals Begin

France and Morocco will collide on Thursday in a blockbuster World Cup quarter-final at Gillette Stadium outside Boston, as the most ambitious, 48-team edition of the tournament enters its decisive final stretch.

After a month of football that has produced 280 goals in 96 matches, the field has been cut to eight nations all aiming to be on the pitch for the July 19 final in East Rutherford.

France, who have been one of the outstanding sides of the 2026 tournament, begin the last-eight fixtures against Morocco in a rematch of their 2022 World Cup semi-final.

For Les Bleus, defeat would also close the curtain on the tenure of head coach Didier Deschamps, who is stepping down after a 14-year spell that brought a World Cup title and a place among the game’s most successful managers.

Deschamps, one of only three men to win the World Cup as both player and coach, insisted he is not dwelling on his own legacy as the stakes rise.

He said, “I am not thinking about that at all. In my head, with my staff, the objective is just to do everything we can so that things go well. I am focused on this Morocco team and on things going well for us.”

Some fans have pointed nervously to the appointment of Argentinian referee Facundo Tello, given that France and Argentina could be on course for a repeat of the 2022 final if both advance.

Deschamps brushed aside any suggestion that the referee should be seen as a problem.

He said, “There are always decisions that can lead to debate depending on which side you are on, but our opponents are Morocco. I can’t consider the referee to be an opponent.”

Morocco’s Rise And Spain–Belgium Duel

Morocco arrive with the confidence of a team that has combined technical skill, physical power and clear tactical ideas under coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

They reached the Africa Cup of Nations final in recent years and pushed France in their 2022 World Cup semi-final, experiences that have hardened a core of players who are comfortable on the biggest stages.

Deschamps acknowledged that heritage and the threat they pose.

He said, “We faced them four years ago in the semi-finals, and they’ve played in an Africa Cup of Nations final.”

He added, “They are a very, very good team with excellent players — they aren’t here by accident. It’s going to be a clash between two teams that like to have possession, attack, and score goals.”

The winner in Boston will meet either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals after those two European heavyweights clash in Los Angeles on Friday.

Spain, who are yet to concede a goal at this tournament, knocked out Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in the last 16, relying on their signature control and clinical finishing.

Belgium, for their part, arrive in California buoyed by a dominant 4–1 win over the United States in the previous round, a performance that suggested their attack has found rhythm at the right moment.

Messi’s Houdini Act And England’s Test

On the other side of the draw, defending champions Argentina will face Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday after surviving a series of scares in the knockout phase.

Argentina, chasing back-to-back titles for the first time since Brazil achieved the feat in 1962, were pushed to the brink by Cape Verde in the last 32 before edging through.

Then, in Atlanta, Lionel Messi produced what many fans have dubbed a Houdini act, inspiring a staggering 3–2 win over Egypt after his team trailed by two goals late on.

Messi had earlier missed a first-half penalty but refused to let that define the night.

He said afterwards, “We didn’t want today to be the end, we didn’t want to go home.”

The winner between Argentina and Switzerland will meet either Norway or England, who square off in Miami in another high-stakes quarter-final on Saturday.

England advanced by beating co-hosts Mexico 3–2 in a pulsating encounter at the Estadio Azteca, a result that has revived belief in their quest for a first major trophy since 1966.

Standing in their path is a powerful Norway team led by Erling Haaland, whose two goals in Sunday’s 2–1 win over Brazil underlined his status as one of the most decisive forwards in the game.

As the tournament barrels towards its climax, the quarterfinals now bring together major football powers, challengers and individual stars whose next 90 minutes could define their careers, with every step looking towards the July 19 final that awaits in East Rutherford.
