A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, presided over by Justice Sylvanus Oriji, has this Thursday morning granted bail to former Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku for ₦150 million. The bail conditions include two sureties, each required to provide the same amount.
The court registrar must verify the residential addresses of the sureties to confirm they reside in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Additionally, one of the sureties must be a director within the Federal Civil Service.
Ishaku was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of alleged fraud amounting to ₦27 billion. The former governor, who served Taraba State from May 2015 to May 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was taken into custody at his Abuja residence on the evening of Friday, September 27, and brought to court the following morning.
He is facing trial alongside Bello Yero, a former Permanent Secretary for Taraba State’s Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who is also implicated in the case. Justice Oriji has barred both defendants from leaving the country without court permission.
The EFCC, represented by counsel Rotimi Jacobs, did not oppose Ishaku’s bail request, noting that the former governor had previously been granted administrative bail and had not violated its terms.
Justice Oriji has scheduled the trial to commence on November 4, 5, and 13.
