Nigeria Officially Out of World Cup as FIFA Names DR Congo for Play-Off

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed the final teams for the 2026 World Cup inter-confederation play-offs. The long-awaited decision ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament.

In an accreditation notice to journalists, FIFA listed DR Congo as Africa’s representative. That confirmation shuts out Nigeria from the play-offs.

The Nigeria Football Federation had challenged its defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025. The decisive match ended 1-1. However, Nigeria lost on penalties.

The NFF filed a formal protest after the game. It alleged that DR Congo used ineligible players during the tie. The federation asked FIFA to overturn the result and award Nigeria a place in the play-offs.

Still, FIFA’s latest communication made no change to the qualified teams. As a result, the original outcome stands. Nigeria is now officially eliminated from the race to the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA Confirms Six-Team Play-Off Line-Up

In its statement, FIFA said, “The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 host cities.”

The governing body also confirmed the six qualified teams. It said, “All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”

The play-off matches will begin on Thursday, March 26. New Caledonia will face Jamaica. Meanwhile, Bolivia will play Suriname.

After that, DR Congo will meet the winner of New Caledonia versus Jamaica on Tuesday, March 31. The winner of that match will secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.

With this confirmation, there is no further path for Nigeria to qualify. The Super Eagles must now look ahead to future competitions.
