Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned that U.S. President Donald Trump is plunging the world into a third global war over what he described as “criminal regime change operations,” particularly in Iran.
Speaking in an interview published Monday by Russian state agency TASS, Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said World War III has not technically begun but could ignite at any moment.
“Technically, no. But if Trump continues his insane course of criminal regime change, it will undoubtedly begin. And any event could be the trigger. Any,” he said.
Medvedev alleged that Washington’s recent attack on Iran was part of a larger strategy “to maintain global dominance.”
He described the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a “grave mistake,” arguing it endangered American lives worldwide.
“The late ayatollah was the spiritual father of nearly 300 million Shiites. And now he’s also a martyr,” he added.
Medvedev’s Warning Global Security
He predicted Iran would intensify its nuclear ambitions. “There’s no doubt that Iran will triple its efforts to develop nuclear weapons,” he stated.
Medvedev said U.S. military action had unified Iranian society, providing social consolidation that could help the country endure despite steep reconstruction costs.
Asked if Russia could face similar surprise attacks, Medvedev pointed to nuclear deterrence. “There is only one guarantee. The U.S. fears Russia and knows the cost of a nuclear conflict,” he said.
His comments come amid worsening and widening crises in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, with fears that escalating strikes, assassinations, and regime change rhetoric could spiral into a wider global conflict.
Back home, Trump has come under harsh criticism even from his MAGA Movement and the GOP, many arguing the conflict was needless because it was unprovoked.
