The new Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has set up an eight-member committee. This group will handle the rollout of state police. It will also push forward his other agenda for policing in Nigeria.

Disu took this step on Wednesday. It happened during his first meeting with senior police officers. This came right after the Nigeria Police Council confirmed him as the 23rd Inspector-General on Tuesday.

The council’s approval cleared the path.

President Bola Tinubu will swear him in soon at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.

Disu spoke to top police leaders. “Leadership is not about position but responsibility,” he said. He made it clear that professionalism and accountability must guide all actions. These ideas should shape work in every command across the country.

He added that real power comes with self-control. Respect for human rights stays key. “Every Nigerian must be treated with dignity, fairness and justice,” Disu declared. This applies no matter a person’s status or background.

Disu also plans to boost internal checks. He directed the Public Complaint Unit and X-Squad to work on their own without interference.

New Committee Takes Shape

Professor Olu Ogunsakin will lead the eight-member state police committee. This move supports talks about decentralised policing.

The Federal Government has said Nigeria is ready for state police. It sees this as part of needed changes to improve security.

The new IGP wants more involvement from different government levels in security matters.

His actions show a focus on better oversight and citizen-focused policing.

Many will be watching to see how these steps play out in practice.
