Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, has directed troops of Operation Whirl Stroke to remain resolute in sustaining pressure on terrorists and criminal groups across their areas of responsibility.

He gave the charge while addressing soldiers at the 401 Special Forces Brigade in Makurdi, Benue State. Operation Whirl Stroke targets armed groups operating in Benue, Taraba, parts of Nasarawa, and Kogi states.

Army spokesperson Apollonia Anele said the COAS cautioned troops to remain neutral in communal conflicts, stressing that credibility and public trust are vital.

He reminded them that the Army’s constitutional mandate requires “fairness, firmness and fidelity” to the rule of law.

Shaibu commended the troops for their resilience and sacrifice, noting that their efforts have enabled displaced persons to return to their homes.

“Troops’ perseverance in the face of persistent threats has not only degraded criminal networks but has also created a secure environment necessary for socio-economic activities to resume,” he said.

He added that the safe return of displaced persons is proof of operational effectiveness. However, he warned that achievements must be matched with professionalism, discipline, and strict adherence to the Rules of Engagement.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Operation Whirl Stroke, Shaibu called for intelligence-led operations, stronger inter-agency collaboration, and sustained community engagement to consolidate recent gains.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to troop welfare under his “Soldier First” philosophy.

“I assure you that your well-being and that of your families will continue to receive priority attention,” he said, pledging improvements in infrastructure and living conditions to ensure a motivated and combat-ready force.
