Tens of thousands of international students are protesting across various provinces in Canada over recent federal policy changes that put them at risk of deportation from Canada.
The government’s decision to limit study permits and alter immigration policies has left many students who hoped to gain permanent residency uncertain.
In June, the Canadian government announced that foreign nationals can no longer apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). Several provincial policies have also introduced a 25% reduction in permanent residency nominations.
Foreign nationals have used study permits for decades to gain Permanent Residency and citizenship in Canada.
Advocacy groups warn that these graduates risk deportation when their current work permits expire at the end of the year.
Despite contributing to the Canadian economy and society, students now struggle with heavy debts and dashed hopes.
The protests erupted nationwide, with international students calling on the government to extend work permits and provide clear pathways to permanent residency. They argue that the new policy changes threaten their futures and undermine Canada’s reputation as a welcoming destination for international students.
However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged the importance of these workers during the COVID-19 labor shortage but said the country’s economic needs have changed since then.
