Council Of Legal Education Lists 117 Accredited Law Universities

The Council of Legal Education has released an updated list of 117 universities accredited to admit Law students in Nigeria, warning prospective students against enrolling in unaccredited law degree-awarding institutions.

In a public notice shared via its Facebook page early Thursday, the council said graduates from institutions without law programme approval will not be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

The notice was signed by Aderonke Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration.

In Nigeria, Law graduates must attend the Nigerian Law School to be called to the Bar and qualified to practice law.

“Students admitted into Law programmes in universities that are not accredited by the Council of Legal Education will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.”

The council also warned that universities admitting students into law programmes without its approval violate regulations governing legal education in Nigeria.

Such institutions risk sanctions in accordance with extant regulations and policy.

According to the notice, the council publishes an updated list of universities approved to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria.

The council said the publication would guide prospective students, parents, guardians and others seeking admission into law programmes.

The Council of Legal Education regulates legal education in Nigeria and supervises the Nigerian Law School.

The body accredits universities to run law programmes and ensures compliance with standards for legal training.

The council was established under the Legal Education (Consolidation) Act and oversees practical legal training for law graduates before their call to the Nigerian Bar.

What This Means For Prospective Law Students

Students admitted into non-accredited law programmes will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

This means they cannot be called to the Bar and cannot practice law in Nigeria.

Parents and guardians should verify their Ward’s university status before paying admission fees.

The council’s list serves as the official reference for checking accreditation status.

Universities that admit law students without approval face sanctions under extant regulations.

This includes possible suspension of their law programme or full accreditation revocation.

Aspirants to the legal profession should confirm their chosen university appears on this 117-university list before applying.
