Three members of the House of Representatives formally left the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, citing internal disagreements and new political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read the lawmakers’ resignation letters during plenary, a day after the National Assembly resumed following the Sallah recess.
Rabilu Bala, member for Jama’are/Itas-Gadau in Bauchi State, defected to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
In his letter, Bala said persistent internal disagreements and consultations with stakeholders in his constituency informed his decision.
He added that he believed the PRP would better serve his constituents’ interests.
The PRP traces its roots to the late Mallam Aminu Kano and has been rebuilding support in parts of northern Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Abubakar Zango of Yola North/Yola South/Girei in Adamawa State moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“My decision is guided by conscience and the national interest,” Zango wrote in his resignation letter, promising to keep representing his constituents.
Also joining the ADC was the member for Dukku/Nafada, Gombe State, Abdullahi, who cited similar reasons for leaving the APC.
The ADC has become a refuge for politicians seeking alternatives to Nigeria’s two dominant parties, partly because of ongoing talks among opposition forces.
Why Members Are Leaving
Lawmakers who left named internal party disputes, leadership tussles, and succession calculations as driving factors.
“Concerns over developments within the party at both the state and national levels,” Bala said in his letter.
Some defections appear tactical ahead of primary contests and coalition negotiations for 2027.
Although the APC still holds majorities in both National Assembly chambers, these exits reflect fractures in select state chapters.
Defections could reshape local political math ahead of next year’s polls, even if they do not immediately threaten APC’s national majority.
Opposition parties see the moves as openings to strengthen their National Assembly presence.
Meanwhile, APC leaders maintain the party remains strong and capable of managing isolated departures.
