U.S. President Donald Trump has clashed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over ongoing military operations in Lebanon, as tensions threaten fragile regional talks.
The dispute followed a phone call on Monday, during which Trump expressed frustration about Israel’s continued strikes, especially around Beirut.
The White House is concerned the escalation could derail ongoing Iran-related ceasefire discussions, which include efforts to reduce hostilities involving Hezbollah.
After the call, Trump signalled optimism about diplomatic progress.
“I had a very productive call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, and there will be no Troops going to Beirut.”
“Any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back.”
Tension Over Lebanon Strikes
Israel has continued military operations in southern Lebanon following rocket attacks by Hezbollah targeting northern Israeli cities, including areas near Haifa.
Netanyahu defended the actions, stating Israel would not stop unless attacks cease.
“The IDF will continue to operate as planned in southern Lebanon… if Hezbollah does not cease attacking our cities and citizens.”
Meanwhile, U.S. officials said Trump believed Israel’s response had gone too far, citing civilian casualties and destruction in Beirut suburbs.
Trump also pointed to risks of damaging ongoing diplomacy with Iran, which has influence over Hezbollah.
“Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.”
Ceasefire Talks And Uncertain Outcome
Trump later said indirect communication with Hezbollah suggested a pause in hostilities could be possible.
“I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop.”
“That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel.”
However, Netanyahu publicly maintained Israel’s stance had not changed, even as reports suggested some planned strikes were halted.
Trump also tempered expectations about the truce.
“Let’s see how long that lasts – Hopefully it will be for ETERNITY!”
The situation reflects a complex regional conflict involving Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran, with the United States playing a central diplomatic role.
As military operations and negotiations continue, the risk of escalation is getting alarmingly high across the Israel-Lebanon border, and the region.
